8 1/2 (153 E 8th Ave, Vancouver) has a lovely atmosphere, great happy hour, and offers a chill environment that is not as loud and busy as other bars/restaurants on Main St. The first thing I noticed when looking at the menu was that there were no vegan options (it has been a while since I have been at a restaurant with zero visible vegan options). When I asked the server if anything on the menu could be made vegan she sent another server to help me, a fellow vegan. This lovely vegan server had a few suggestions (as per the menu there were very few options), mostly how to modify the salads. I had a salad for lunch that day so I wasn’t too interested in those suggestions until she suggested one more option- the Marketplace Pizza on a gluten free crust (as the original crust has eggs in it) with no cheese. I decided to give that a try and I am glad I did. It was delicious!!! The pizza came with roasted vegetables (caramelized onion, mushrooms, and lots of beets) and fresh basil on a sundried tomato base. Dipping it in Frank’s hot sauce (no surprise here when it comes to me) made it even better. It was so good that my non-vegan friends had a slice and wished they had ordered that themselves. It goes to show that even in the most unlikely of places, if you ask for options, there are delicious vegan options to be found.
